Waqa and Macca seal the deal

On a muggy afternoon, Fillongley firsts visited Solihull blossomfield. The wicket has been a seamer friendly wicket over the last few years and this year was no different.

With the captain and the vice arriving late due to heavy traffic conditions, Morgan went out to toss, he lost it, and we were stuck in on a spongy green top.

From the off Satterthwaite and Felton bowled in good areas and got movement. Carty was first to depart, clean bowled, followed by franks. With both openers back in the hutch, Ej and Dj looked to rebuild. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be a long stay on the wicket for David as one stopped on him as he looked to work it through mid wicket and was caught at cover. Blackmore now joined Ej and they faced a very tough period of high class seam bowling, probably best I’ve seen from an opposition team this year. They were conservative and didn’t look to be too flashy as the score crept up slowly to 50 in 20 overs. Elliot was to depart next as he flashed outside the off stump, a rush of blood on seeing a half volley and he snicker off to the keeper. The man of the hour strode to the crease next. Having batted from 7-11 this year he grabbed his opportunity with both hands. Skeldo got turned the ball round the corners, knocked cover drives into gaps for 2s, swept the spinners and rotated the strike as Aaron was beginning to find his feet before he was adjudged LBW to the offy. The skipper strode to the crease but not for long as he played an irresponsible shot and scooped a catch to long on. Fillongley now 6 down for 87 and a very low total looked on the cards as Saj could only muster 3 runs before he too was out trying to sweep the ball off middle. McNeil joined Sam and attack was seen as the best form of defence. While they kept the good balls out, both took initiative on anything slightly loose, ran hard between the wickets. Sam was next to go for a well made 50 his maiden half century for the 1s. Well batted mate. McNeill went on his merry way swinging from the hips to get a very valuable 27* and fillongley finished on 151.

After a very good tea, the men strode out to one message from the captain. ‘Bowl straight and make them get these runs by applying pressure.’

Bloss got to a good start with Bashir scoring freely and taking a liking to Mcneill.

I got 5 from the other end while Macca took 1 in his first spell. Then Lee came back on and took another 3. Bloss were 95-9 soon after drinks. We then expected the last wicket to fall but satterthwaite and his mate fought back before Dj dived on his bad shoulder, made a great stop, flung the ball in to Saj who took the bails off to affect a run out. Fillongley 24 points.

Well played boys.
